Positioning Consultant for B2B Startups

Cost: $5,000 – $15,000 (one-time project)

Are too many of your deals lost or never seem to close?

The problem is usually that you’re attracting the wrong buyers.

Bad positioning casts too wide a net, fills your pipeline with prospects who were never going to close, and makes every deal feel harder than it should.

Good positioning is the solution. When your positioning clicks, buyers who reach you already understand what you do, already feel the problem you solve, and are already primed to buy.

As a startup positioning consultant, I help B2B founders position themselves to attract the deals that will actually close.

What we’ll build together:

  • ICP Definition

Positioning starts with a precise answer to: who is this actually for? Not “mid-market B2B companies” — which company, which role, which problem, which trigger event, which alternatives are they comparing you against. The narrower and more specific the ICP, the sharper the positioning. We’ll build yours from the ground up or pressure-test and sharpen what you already have.

  • Competitive Positioning Map

Before you can position yourself, you need an honest picture of the landscape you’re positioning in.

We’ll map who your real competitors are (including the “do nothing” option and internal alternatives buyers consider), where the genuine white space is, and which differentiation claims are defensible versus which ones are made by your competitors.

  • Positioning Statement

A rigorous, internally-aligned positioning statement: what you do, who you do it for, the frame of reference buyers use to evaluate you, your point of difference, and the reason to believe it.

Not a tagline. Not a mission statement. A strategic anchor that every go-to-market decision connects back to.

  • Messaging Architecture

With the positioning locked, I’ll act as a B2B messaging consultant to translate it into the messaging your team actually uses: core value pillars, proof points by persona, objection-handling language, and competitive talk tracks.

Your messaging architecture will serve as a source of truth for every sales conversation, marketing campaign, and investor pitch.

  • Homepage Copy

Rewritten homepage copy that puts the new positioning front and center, including headline, subheadline, value pillars, social proof framing, and CTA. Ready to hand directly to your designer or developer.

What you’ll get:

  • Defined timeline: 3–6 weeks

  • Fixed scope and predetermined cost

  • Built on your ICP, not generic templates

  • No long-term commitment required

This is the right fit if:

  • You’re losing deals to competitors you should be beating and you’re not sure why
  • Every prospect meeting starts with ten minutes of “so, what exactly do you do?”
  • Your sales team wins with some customers, but can’t get traction with others. And the pattern isn’t clear

  • You’re trying to enter a new market or category and need positioning that works for a different buyer.
  • You’ve raised a round and need your positioning to reflect where the company is going, not where it started
  • You’ve been told you need better messaging and you suspect the real problem is upstream of the words.

What positioning work actually involves

There’s a version of positioning work that produces a glossy brand document nobody reads after the kickoff deck. That’s not what I do.

Good positioning work is uncomfortable. It requires making real choices, like ruling out customers you currently serve, conceding ground to competitors who are better at certain things, picking a lane that’s narrower than your gut (and investors) say it should be. Most founders resist those choices because they feel like leaving money on the table. But vague, inclusive positioning is what actually leaves money on the table in the form of long sales cycles, price pressure, and prospects who can’t explain your product to their colleagues.

My process is built around your existing customers and lost deals, not around brainstorming sessions. We look at who’s actually buying, why they chose you over the alternatives, what the nearly-won deals had in common, and where your differentiation is real versus aspirational. The positioning that comes out of that process is grounded in evidence, which means your sales team will actually use it and your buyers will actually believe it.

How this differs from working with a brand or messaging agency

Agencies produce deliverables. A startup positioning consultant produces decisions and then helps you express those decisions clearly.

The difference matters because positioning problems are almost never solved by better creative execution. They’re solved by making harder strategic choices earlier in the process. A good positioning consultant pushes back on the brief, challenges the ICP assumptions, and tells you when the differentiation you want to claim isn’t actually differentiating. That’s not the relationship most agencies are set up for.

I work with founders and CMOs directly, typically over 3–6 weeks, with no junior staff on the account. You get one person who understands and is accountable for both the strategy and the execution.

Need ongoing positioning support after the project?

Positioning isn’t set-and-forget. Markets shift, products evolve, and what worked at seed doesn’t always hold at Series A. If you want a senior outside perspective to help you adapt and pressure-test your positioning as you grow — without hiring a full-time executive — the Growth Advisor model is the natural next step.
